What is a Provisional Improvement Notice (PIN)?

If there is an OHS issue and the HSR has consulted with the person (employer/ member of staff) about fixing/ preventing it and within reasonable time the issue has not been resolved the HSR may issue a Provisional Improvement Notice (PIN) if they believe on reasonable grounds that a person:

  • is contravening the Act or Regulations
  • has contravened the Act and it may continue or be repeated.

PINs require the person to remedy the issue or to prevent it from happening.  These should only be used if there is no other way to resolve the issue.

They must be very specific, stating the grounds of the HSRs belief, the part of the Act that has been contravened and a date for it to be remedied; remembering you have to give at least 8 days from the PIN is issued.
